Honestly the best way to get a grasp of things is to practice...a lot.
When given a blank page, there several different ways to get to one destination. Doing a lot of hands on projects familiarizes you to the different routes.
You obviously won't be able to remember everything (and why should you?) but you'd have an idea in how to go about things
