Part01 - Machine Learning with Dr. Sheldon Cooper

What is machine Learning??

Machine learning is just an object labeling technology, looks into attributes and then labels it accordingly. In essence its process to make decision based on the data available with you at that point of time.

About season 4, Sheldon attempts to calculate when he will die, and estimates that he has 60 years to live. He concludes that he will miss "the singularity", a point in time in which technology will be advanced enough for him to transfer his brain into a machine and achieve immortality.

How does Machine Learning work ??

The idea of Machine learning is to predict an outcome based on the input data. How does it do that ?? The answer is algorithm or a recipe. You provide lot of labelled data to the recipe and it finds patterns in the data. This recipe is what we call as model and you could extrapolate the outcome with new data. The key here is you are not programming the instructions the but you are asking the machine to find patterns and then use that to predict outcome.

In season 2, Sheldon decides to become friend with Kripke to enable him to access to a university computer which Kripke controls. He even invents an algorithm for making friends.

Here is the example of Sheldon predicting the outcome of the card game Mystic Warlords of Ka'a based on the data available i.e., machine learning.

Why do we need Machine Learning ??

The objective for machine learning is to succeed for new data by generalizing the useful pattern observed in the past / historic data.

Sheldon sarcastic view on how bad a generalized model of attributing a persons personality based on relative position of constellation with respect to the sun's apparent position at the time of your birth.

Machine Learning enables us to delegate tasks to a computers unlocking speed for decision making and driving efficiency gains.
