From Manual QA to API Testing: Postman Collections That Mirror Real Test Strategy

Manual QA folks often get “learn Postman” without a map. Clicking Send is not a strategy.

A simple ladder:

  1. Smoke the contract — status codes + critical fields for happy path.
  2. Negative cases that matter — auth missing, bad IDs, empty required fields.
  3. Environments as data — base URL, tokens, IDs stay out of hard-coded requests.
  4. Assertions that protect the business — not “response exists,” but “status is one of …”.
  5. A thin suite you can re-run — folder = risk area; name tests like a bug title.
