Every month I meet a small business owner who is about to put real money into Google Ads while their own website quietly leaks customers. The landing page loads in nine seconds. The title tag says "Home". The phone number is inside an image. And then they wonder why the ads "don't work."
Ads amplify whatever your website already is. If the foundation is shaky, paid traffic just shows the cracks to more people, faster. So before anyone spends a rupee on ads, I run a one-page SEO checklist. It takes an hour, costs nothing, and has saved my clients more money than any bidding strategy. Here it is.
1. Can Google actually read the page?
Open your most important page and view the source. Is the main headline real text, or is it baked into a banner image? Is the phone number selectable text or a JPEG? Search engines can't read text inside images — and neither can a visitor trying to copy your number. If key content lives inside images, that's job one.
2. Does every page have one clear job?
Pick your homepage. In five seconds, can a stranger tell what you sell, who it's for, and what to do next? Most small business sites try to say everything at once — services, about us, testimonials, gallery — and end up saying nothing clearly. One page, one primary keyword theme, one call to action. The rest can live on inner pages.
3. Titles and descriptions that earn the click.
Check what your pages actually look like in Google search results. Titles like "Home | ABC Enterprises" tell nobody anything. A good title names the service and the city. The meta description is your free ad copy — write it like one. This alone has lifted my clients' click-through rates without changing rankings.
4. Speed on a real phone, not your office wifi.
Test your site on a mid-range phone with mobile data. If it takes more than three or four seconds to become usable, you are losing people before they ever read a word. Usually the culprits are the same: oversized images, redundant plugins, and chat widgets loading before content. Compress, remove what you don't need, and retest.
5. The contact path has to be frictionless.
Click through your own site as if you were a customer in a hurry. How many taps to reach a call button? Is there a WhatsApp option? Does the contact form actually deliver to an inbox someone reads? I've seen businesses spend lakhs on ads with a broken enquiry form. Test yours on your phone this week.
6. One trustworthy "proof" element above the fold.
People don't buy from strangers; they buy from strangers who look credible. A genuine review count, a photo of your real shop or team, a certification — one honest proof element near the top beats a paragraph of adjectives.
7. Local signals, if local customers matter.
If your customers are local, Google needs to see it: your city named naturally in the content, a complete Google Business Profile, and the same name-address-phone everywhere you're listed.
8. Analytics that you will actually look at.
Install basic analytics and Search Console. In thirty days you'll be able to answer: where did visitors come from, and what did they do? Without this, every marketing decision is a guess.
That's the whole checklist — no developer, no paid tools. What it needs is honesty: most owners find two or three items failing. Fix the foundation first, and every rupee you later spend on ads works noticeably harder.
And if you'd rather have someone experienced run through this for your business and hand you a prioritized fix list, that's exactly what a good SEO Company Bhopal should do before ever talking about monthly packages or ad budgets. The checklist is free; the discipline to run it is what you're really paying for.
