This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass

What I Built

TouchGrass AI is a simple outdoor mission generator powered by open-source AI.

Choose an activity such as walking, running, gardening, nature exploring, or birdwatching, and the AI creates a fun 20–30 minute outdoor mission with real-world challenges.

For example:

🌳 Your Outdoor Mission

🚶 Walk for 20 minutes

🌿 Find 3 different plants

🐦 Listen for 2 different birds

📸 Take one interesting photo

📵 Spend the final 5 minutes without your phone

The idea is simple:

Use AI for a few seconds → Put the screen away → Go outside. 🌿

The project is designed for anyone who wants a small push to spend more time outdoors instead of continuously staying behind a screen.

How I Built It

TouchGrass AI is built as a lightweight React application with a simple, activity-focused interface.

The core of the project is open-source AI, which generates personalized outdoor missions based on the activity selected by the user.

The flow is intentionally simple:

Choose Activity → Generate Mission → Complete It Outside 🌳

I kept the project lightweight with no database, authentication, or unnecessary backend complexity because the goal is not to keep users inside the application.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation gives developers more control over how AI is used and allows them to experiment with different open-source models and approaches.

For TouchGrass AI, AI is used as a tool to encourage real-world activity, rather than becoming another reason to spend more time on a screen.

The project can be adapted to different open models and workflows instead of being completely tied to a single closed AI provider.

Most importantly, the AI is only the beginning of the experience.

The real product is what happens after the user closes the screen. 🌿
