Docker can run on Mac as well, but will require more resources to create Docker virtual machine space.
I'm not sure if you're talking about other resources I don't know, but if you were referring to Docker Toolbox (which, among others, used VirtualBox), the new Docker for Mac doesn't need to create a dedicated VM but rather uses HyperKit, a lightweight native virtualization solution available on Yosemite and higher.
