Tipping math is one of those problems that looks trivial until you're the one holding the bill. Three countries, three different norms, a pre-tax vs. post-tax trap, and four friends all reaching for their phones to "figure out their share."
I kept a notes-app formula for this for years. Then I built a proper tool. Here's the whole thing: the rules, the demo, and why it lives in the browser.
The problem with tipping math
It's not the multiplication — it's the decisions. Every restaurant bill forces three of them:
- What percentage? 18–20% in the US, 15–20% in Canada, 10–15% in Mexico. Get the country wrong and you're either cheap or overpaying.
- Pre-tax or post-tax? The custom in the US and Canada is pre-tax. On a $100 NYC dinner (8.875% tax), 20% on the total instead of the subtotal quietly adds $1.78. Nobody asks for it; most people just do it by accident.
- Who owes what? Splitting tax and tip proportionally across 4 people, with rounding that still reconciles — this is where phone calculators and "I'll just Venmo $30" fall apart.
Three decisions, one awkward silence at the table. That's the actual problem.
Three rules that cover 95% of situations
Forget memorizing etiquette guides. These three cover nearly every restaurant scenario in North America:
- Rule 1 — Match the country: US 18–20%, Canada 15–20%, Mexico 10–15%. In Mexico, check the bill for "propina" first — if it's already a line item, you're done.
- Rule 2 — Always use the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the total is a ~8–10% accidental overpay. Enter the number before tax.
- Rule 3 — Split tax and tip evenly unless orders were wildly unequal. Per-person total = (subtotal + tax + tip) ÷ people. The one person who ordered the lobster can adjust upward from there.
A 10-second demo
Here's the tool I built — it runs entirely in the browser, no signup, no data leaving your device:
Enter the subtotal, tap a percentage preset (10/15/18/20/25% — covering all three countries' norms), and optionally set the number of people:
$120 subtotal, 20% tip, 8% tax, 4 people → $38.40 each. Tip, tax, and per-person amounts all computed in one view. Try it here: tip calculator
Why I built it in the browser (disclosure: it's mine)
Full disclosure: I built this tool. It's one of 30 free utilities at ToolkitLoop, and I made a deliberate decision to keep all of them 100% client-side.
The reasoning is boring and practical: a tip calculator handles numbers you'd rather not send to a server. Browser-only means no account, no tracking, no "create a free account to split the bill" dark pattern — and it works the moment the page loads, which matters when the server is standing at your table.
If you travel between the US, Canada, and Mexico — or just regularly split dinners with friends — bookmark it. And if your tipping rule of thumb differs from mine, I'd genuinely like to hear it in the comments: pre-tax or post-tax, and do you adjust by country?
