My Money Stress Came From Over-Optimization

For a long time, I assumed money stress meant I wasn’t optimizing enough. If I tightened the budget, refined categories, or improved efficiency, things would finally feel under control.

They didn’t.

What actually caused my money stress was the opposite: over-optimization. I had optimized my finances past the point where they were livable.

Optimization increases sensitivity

Optimized systems are tuned tightly. Every dollar has a job. Every category has a target. Every deviation matters.

That precision looks responsible, but it makes the system highly sensitive. Small changes—slightly higher spending, delayed income, a busy week—create outsized reactions.

Stress didn’t come from spending more. It came from a system that couldn’t absorb normal variation. Finelo starts from this exact insight: stability requires slack, not tight tuning.

Over-optimization multiplies decisions

The more optimized my system became, the more often I had to intervene.
