But organized higher education has a much longer history.
European universities began developing centuries ago, with institutions such as Bologna, Oxford, Cambridge and Padua becoming important centers of learning.
Their subjects were obviously different from today's computer science curriculum.
Students studied areas such as:
Law
Medicine
Philosophy
Theology
Mathematics
Astronomy
The University of Padua, for example, became particularly important for scientific study and later developed a strong tradition in medicine and anatomy.
The interesting connection to modern technical education is the idea of structured knowledge, academic communities and specialized study.
Modern STEM education may look completely different, but the underlying concept of organized higher learning has deep historical roots.
