Rivers can be viewed as natural systems whose behaviour emerges from interactions between water, terrain and sediment.
From a geographical perspective, one useful classification is based on flow regime. Perennial rivers maintain flow throughout the year, while intermittent rivers flow during certain periods. Ephemeral channels may carry water primarily after intense rainfall. Exotic rivers are sustained by water originating in wetter areas even when they pass through arid environments.

Channel morphology provides another classification.
Straight channels tend to be constrained by geological structures or engineering.
Meandering channels develop through a balance between erosion on outer bends and deposition on inner bends.
Braided channels contain multiple interconnected paths separated by sediment bars and are commonly associated with high sediment supply.
These concepts are useful beyond basic geography. Understanding river morphology matters for flood management, environmental engineering, infrastructure planning, watershed management and ecosystem conservation.
