The University of North Dakota's latest federal investigation has a significant research-security dimension.
The U.S. Department of Education and State Department announced the investigation on September 16, 2026, saying their review identified potential problems with UND's foreign funding disclosures.
The investigation includes the university's School of Aerospace and its uncrewed air systems work. Federal agencies said this research has received significant federal support and has also attracted involvement from Chinese aviation companies.
From a research and technology perspective, the case demonstrates the complexity of managing international collaborations alongside federal funding and disclosure requirements.
The agencies have requested documentation related to foreign contracts and gifts, international research partnerships, foreign entities, personnel and institutional controls. UND has 30 days to provide the requested information.
Section 117 requires federally assisted universities to disclose foreign gifts and contracts worth at least $250,000 annually.
