Volcanoes provide an interesting example of why scientific measurements need context.
When we ask for the “biggest volcano,” we could be asking about volume, footprint, elevation, base-to-summit height or active status.
Mauna Loa is the clearest benchmark for active volcanoes. The USGS identifies it as Earth's largest active volcano and records an elevation of 4,169 meters. Its submarine flanks extend approximately 5 kilometers toward the seafloor, while the volcano's mass also depresses the underlying seafloor.
Tamu Massif is an interesting case from a scientific-classification perspective. It was initially interpreted as a giant single shield volcano, but later magnetic-field research supported a ridge-focused formation model instead.
This makes volcano records a useful reminder that scientific datasets and classifications can evolve when new evidence becomes available.
