Universities are complex systems where safety policies, free expression, student rights and institutional governance often intersect.
The lawsuit filed by Mahmoud Khalil and other former student activists against Columbia University provides a current example of this challenge.
The plaintiffs allege that Columbia failed to adequately respond to harassment and doxxing involving pro-Palestinian students. They also allege that university responses and disciplinary policies created additional risks for activists.
From a systems perspective, the case raises several questions:
How should universities process reports of online and offline harassment?
How can safety policies remain viewpoint-neutral?
How should institutions balance security with freedom of expression?
What escalation mechanisms should students have?
How should digital harassment and doxxing be addressed?
Khalil's earlier immigration detention adds another layer to the story. He was detained for 104 days after his March 2025 arrest and continues to contest deportation proceedings.
