Welcome to our June 2026 E-commerce Industry Report. This month's data clearly illustrates an industry undergoing rapid transformation, characterized by substantial platform migrations, increasing data volumes, and a strong push towards modernization. As Chief E-commerce Analyst, I have thoroughly analyzed the figures to reveal the key trends influencing our digital marketplace.

Insights & Trends

In June 2026, Shopify solidified its position as the dominant platform for e-commerce migrations. Businesses of all sizes, from small startups using Wix to large enterprises on Magento and WooCommerce, are increasingly moving to Shopify, underscoring its perceived stability and extensive ecosystem.

June confirmed a significant 'Great Replatforming' trend among established businesses. We noted a marked rise in migrations originating from stores founded over 5-10 years ago, particularly those utilizing legacy platforms such as Volusion, OSCommerce, and older Magento versions. These shifts highlight a broad strategic effort to modernize core e-commerce infrastructure, aiming for improved scalability, security, and feature sets that older systems often lack. For example, several large companies, including a notable art books retailer and a prominent spiritual wellness brand rich in content, successfully transferred substantial data from WooCommerce to Shopify, illustrating a distinct demand for more powerful SaaS solutions as their operations grow.

The most remarkable finding from June is the unparalleled increase in migrated data volume. We observed numerous migrations involving hundreds of thousands, and in one extraordinary instance, more than two million data entries. These originated primarily from large WooCommerce and BigCommerce stores moving to Shopify. This trend indicates more than just small business activity; it shows that complex, data-intensive enterprises are actively undertaking ambitious replatforming initiatives, seeking platforms equipped to manage their expanding digital presence.

Additionally, platforms such as Wix and WooCommerce remain significant sources for outward migrations. Wix users frequently pursue enhanced e-commerce capabilities as their businesses develop, while many WooCommerce merchants are making a strategic transition, likely motivated by a wish to reduce the complexities of self-hosting and to scale their operations more effectively. We also observed a steady stream of migrations from niche platforms like Big Cartel and Squarespace, suggesting that even smaller, design-oriented businesses are seeking more comprehensive e-commerce features as they expand.

A less obvious, yet equally crucial, trend involves intra-platform migrations (for example, from WooCommerce to WooCommerce, or Magento to Magento). These do not represent platform changes but rather upgrades or re-architectures within the same ecosystem, demonstrating ongoing efforts by merchants to optimize their current configurations.

Predictions:

  • Accelerated Enterprise Replatforming: Considering the significant data volumes recorded, we foresee a continued acceleration in replatforming initiatives among large enterprises, particularly those managing multi-million SKU inventories, as they seek scalable SaaS solutions to accommodate rapid growth and shifting market requirements.
  • AI-Driven Migration Innovations: With ongoing AI advancements in content generation and headless commerce platforms (as exemplified by Wix), we expect the development of more advanced AI-powered migration tools. These will automate data mapping, content normalization, and pre-migration analysis, substantially shortening project timelines and minimizing error rates.
  • Focus on TCO and Specialization: As fundamental platform features become more similar, future migration choices will increasingly depend on the total cost of ownership (TCO) and a platform's capacity to deliver highly specialized, industry-specific functionalities, moving beyond merely generic e-commerce offerings.
