Insights & Trends

Our August 2026 data analysis uncovers several compelling narratives and key developments within the dynamic e-commerce migration landscape:

  • Shopify's Gravitational Pull: Shopify maintains its position as the undisputed leader, consistently attracting a high volume of migrating stores. This trend is particularly evident among businesses transitioning from WooCommerce and popular site builders such as Wix and Big Cartel. This consistent appeal underscores Shopify's reputation for scalability and its user-friendly interface, catering effectively to businesses of diverse sizes.
  • The Legacy Modernization Drive: We observe a clear and growing trend where long-established businesses, some operating for 10-30 years on platforms such as osCommerce, X-Cart, and Volusion, are now investing significantly in comprehensive replatforming efforts. These businesses are transitioning to more modern e-commerce ecosystems, signaling a critical drive for technological refreshing and enhanced adaptability to meet current market demands.
  • High-Volume Enterprise Shifts: Our data highlights multiple migrations involving over 100,000 data items. Notably, a substantial project transferred 415,438 items from a Shopify storefront to Magento, while another moved 304,221 items from X-Cart to PrestaShop. These considerable figures underscore that large-scale enterprises are actively engaged in strategic platform changes, frequently entailing complex data transfers and significant operational overhauls.
  • WooCommerce's Enduring Role: Although frequently a source for migrations towards Shopify, WooCommerce concurrently emerged as a robust target platform itself, especially for businesses migrating from older systems such as osCommerce and X-Cart. This dual role signifies its sustained strength as a flexible, open-source solution, highly favored by established businesses prioritizing greater control and extensive customization options.
  • Niche Vertical Adaptations: Our observations include migrations originating from highly specialized and diverse industries. Examples range from 'Prosthetic device parts' (transitioning from osCommerce to WooCommerce) and 'Organic Hair Care' (moving from BigCommerce to Shopify) to 'Fine Jewellery' (replatforming from Wix to Shopify). This broad spectrum suggests a universal and pervasive need for platform optimization across numerous market segments, irrespective of their specific product vertical.
  • Intra-Platform Evolution: A notable proportion of observed migrations actually occurred between instances of the same platforms (for example, Magento to Magento, PrestaShop to PrestaShop, or WooCommerce to WooCommerce). This pattern indicates that internal upgrades, essential version updates, or strategic server consolidations represent a significant driver for replatforming, extending beyond mere platform switching.

Predictions:

Drawing from the insights gathered, we present the following predictions regarding e-commerce migration trends for the upcoming quarter:

  • We anticipate a sustained acceleration of 'modernization migrations' away from legacy platforms. This trend will be particularly pronounced among systems nearing their end-of-life or those deficient in modern feature sets, as businesses increasingly prioritize enhanced agility and an improved customer experience.
  • Considering the inherent complexity and substantial scale of recent migrations, such as Shopify-to-Magento and X-Cart-to-WooCommerce projects, we foresee a significant rise in demand for advanced data migration services. These services will need to be specifically capable of handling multi-faceted, high-volume data transfers tailored for enterprise-level clients.
  • Given Shopify's intensified focus on bolstering its B2B capabilities, as highlighted in recent platform updates, we anticipate a strategic evolution within their ecosystem. This development could potentially attract a greater number of larger B2B merchants, drawing them away from more traditional platforms in the forthcoming quarters.

Platform & Technical Updates

Throughout July, several leading e-commerce platforms implemented significant updates and enhancements, directly impacting security, overall performance, and merchant operational capabilities:

  • Shopify: Significantly enhanced its international shipping options by integrating DHL Express directly within the admin interface for merchants in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. Furthermore, Managed Markets will discontinue support for Delivered Duty Unpaid (DDU), transitioning affected markets to a system where duties are collected at checkout. Merchants also acquired the new capability to gather WhatsApp marketing consent directly through Shopify Forms. (Source URL)
  • Wix: Launched a notable new feature facilitating WordPress to Wix Headless migration, enabling the seamless import of essential data including products, orders, blog posts, customer records, and media assets. Additionally, Wix introduced Wix Rentals, a solution for scheduling business services, and released eCommerce Cart V2, which unifies its cart and checkout APIs for improved integration. (Source URL)
  • WooCommerce: Prioritized significant performance improvements, particularly benefiting larger stores, through the implementation of optimized order queries, enhanced product object caching, and chunked processing for efficient POS catalog generation. A newly introduced smarter guest checkout feature now empowers customers to link their previous guest orders to their registered user account via email validation. (Source URL)
  • PrestaShop: Issued PrestaShop 9.1.5, a significant update encompassing five critical security fixes and approximately one hundred general bug fixes. • BigCommerce: Enhanced its GraphQL Schema for Storefront B2B, now providing greater visibility by exposing cart origin and associated B2B company details. Furthermore, the Customer ID now directly influences the storefront tax display settings. (Source URL)
  • OpenCart: Released an update to Version 3.0.5.1, which notably added authentication support to its Redis Cache driver. • VirtueMart: Deployed crucial security fixes, specifically addressing a critical vulnerability identified within the Skrill payment plugin, and simultaneously enhanced token validation mechanisms for all forms. • Shift4Shop: Significantly improved the overall performance of its password change and reset process. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for stores managing exceptionally large order histories, ensuring a smoother user experience. (Source URL)
  • Square: Introduced a comprehensive set of new features and significant improvements spanning multiple modules. Addressing internal development matters, a significant resolution was implemented concerning a specific issue affecting Shopify order migrations for development stores. Our dedicated team has now deployed a clear notice to inform merchants about certain plan-specific limitations when they are selecting entities for migration, especially in cases where orders cannot be migrated due to a Shopify 403 error related to particular plans. This proactive measure ensures enhanced transparency and facilitates a considerably smoother migration experience for our valued clients.
