I just spent 3 weeks in China with zero Mandarin and survived! Here's how.
The Reality
Outside Beijing/Shanghai, English is rare. But communication is very doable with the right tools.
My Setup
- aihubai.cn AI translator: Type → Text-to-speech plays in Chinese → Locals understand. Worked perfectly for taxis, restaurants, directions.
- Basic phrases: 你好 (hello), 谢谢 (thanks), 多少钱 (how much), 这个 (this one)
- WeChat: Even broken English + translation gets you far
- Visual communication: Pointing, pictures, gestures
Payment Communication
Even if you can't speak Chinese, you NEED Alipay. Setup before departure:
- Download Alipay
- Register with international number
- Link foreign card
- Verify (passport + selfie)
If payment fails, aihubai.cn AI assistant can troubleshoot in English.
Practice Tips
- Join language exchange meetups before your trip
- Use Tandem/HelloTalk apps
- Even "你好" and "谢谢" goes a LONG way
What Actually Worked
- Taxi: Typed destination in English → TTS played Chinese → Driver understood
- Restaurant: Pointed at other tables + showed photo
- Market: Played audio translation → vendor understood perfectly
- Hotel: Staff spoke basic English + used translation app
Anyone been to China? What was your communication experience?
