What if AI could bring memories back to life — without sending them to the cloud?
This is my submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge — Week 4: Ghost in the Machine.
What I Built
Ofrenda is a privacy-focused, local AI memory archive that transforms personal memories into meaningful digital keepsakes.
We all have little things we never want to forget: a grandparent's favorite song, a childhood story, a familiar place, or a moment that still makes us smile. But over time, these details can fade.
I wanted to explore a different use of AI — not just to improve productivity, but to help preserve the stories that make life meaningful.
Ofrenda brings that idea to life through:
Create Remembrances: Transform personal stories into meaningful remembrances, quotes, key details, and themes.
Ghost Mode: Reimagine a memory as a fictional, supernatural-style story inspired by the original.
Personal Archive: Save, search, revisit, and delete stored memories.
Privacy-Focused Experience: Keep saved memories in browser storage while running AI generation locally.
JSON Export: Export archived memories for personal backup or further use.
I interpreted Ghost in the Machine as the presence of stories and memories within a digital experience — something that makes technology feel a little more human.
Demo
Watch the project demo:
The video walks through Ofrenda's interface and demonstrates how memories can become remembrances, how Ghost Mode reimagines them, and how users can save their stories in a personal archive.

The project is open source, and the repository contains the implementation for the application.
How I Built It
Ofrenda combines a modern web interface with locally running open-source AI.
Technology stac
React + Vite — frontend and responsive user interface.
Node.js + Express — backend API.
Ollama — runs the AI model locally.
Gemma 3 (gemma3:1b) — generates memory-based content.
Browser localStorage — saves the user's archive locally.
JSON — supports exporting saved memories.
When someone enters a memory, the frontend sends it to the Express backend. The backend communicates with the locally running Ollama model, which generates structured content for the application.
Ghost Mode uses the local AI setup to create a fictional, supernatural-style interpretation inspired by the original memory.
I also worked on validating AI responses and adding retry handling to improve reliability.
My aim was to build more than a visual prototype. Ofrenda brings together the interface, backend, local model integration, memory archive, and export functionality into one experience.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation made it possible for me to experiment with AI on my own terms.
By using Ollama and Gemma 3, I could run inference locally, integrate an open-weight model into my application, and explore an architecture that does not depend on a proprietary cloud AI API for generation.
Open tools give developers the freedom to experiment, customize model interactions, understand how different components fit together, and build applications that reflect their own ideas.
That freedom matters especially for a project involving personal memories. Local inference offers an alternative to sending stories to an external AI service, while browser-based storage keeps the saved archive on the user's device.
Of course, local AI is only one part of privacy: how data is handled, transmitted, and stored still matters. That is why I wanted privacy to be a core design consideration rather than an afterthought.
Open innovation is about more than using a model. It is about having the freedom to build something meaningful with it.
My Agent Session
I used AI-assisted development while building and debugging Ofrenda.
DevRelay agent session: Add your saved session link here, if available.

The Spirit of It
The heart of Ofrenda is a simple question:
What if the smallest details we remember about someone could become stories we revisit?
Imagine entering a favorite song, a familiar place, or a small story someone used to tell. Ofrenda turns those details into a remembrance, while Ghost Mode explores a more mysterious, fictional interpretation of the memory.
The goal isn't to recreate a person or replace the act of remembering. It is to use AI as a creative tool for preserving and reimagining the stories that matter to us.
I wanted to build something different from the usual productivity-focused AI application: something personal, creative, and human.
Because sometimes, the smallest memories leave the biggest shadows.
Prize Categories
I'll select the categories that match the project's actual implementation and the challenge's official eligibility rules.
I will only list partner categories for tools or technologies that genuinely apply to Ofrenda.
Built with open-source tools, local AI, and a little ghostly inspiration.
