Bootcamp Week 2

Two weeks completed of bootcamp and it has definitely been intense! More so than I thought it would be.

Having completed online coding training prior to the course in HTML, CSS and JavaScript I thought, maybe slightly arrogantly, that I would breeze the coding side of things and just be picking up industry tips, tricks and insider knowledge. How wrong could I have been!

I’ve found that bootcamp is a totally different setup than learning to code online. For example, the pre-work introduces you to using the command line and creating GitHub repositories and you are expected to be using these from day one. This was a totally new concept for me coming from a CAD background, so that in itself was a challenge. The format seems to be more representative of the real-world with work set on a project/mini-project basis, following initial introductions to different chapters.

That being said, completing online coding prior to the bootcamp has been a lifesaver and I really think it would be a struggle to learn everything, plus submit weekly challenge projects, not having done that. Putting that coding knowledge into practice on these ‘real-world’ projects has been a challenge, albeit one I have enjoyed, rather than just following step-by-step tutorial instructions.

Bootcamp pace is fast, although the support is there if needed. So far my view is that you need some sort of coding introduction to be able to grasp course content as it is relayed, and also to refer back to, and then bootcamp really is the next step.

I have a mountain to climb to become ‘job-ready’ but so far I’m keeping up. Final thoughts… thank goodness for thanks-giving! I’ve got a week off to figure out what on earth has happened in the last two weeks!
