A Free Technical SEO Audit for a Small Site (No Paid Tools)

You do not need an enterprise tool subscription to find the technical problems holding a small site back. Everything in this audit uses free tools. The steps are ordered so a first pass on a small site can fit into one afternoon - treat that as a rough planning timebox, not a guarantee; a larger or messier site will take longer.

1. Can search engines reach the site at all?

  • Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. Confirm you are not accidentally disallowing sections you want ranked. A stray Disallow: / left over from a staging deploy is a classic failure mode.
  • Open yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. It should exist, load, and list your important pages. Submit it in Google Search Console if you have not.
  • While you are there: decide deliberately which AI crawlers you allow. robots.txt is where you allow or block agents like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot. There is no single right answer - allowing them can put your pages in front of people using AI search, blocking them keeps tighter control of your content. The wrong answer is never having looked.

2. What is actually indexed?

  • In Google Search Console, open Pages (under Indexing). Every page you care about should be indexed. Read the reasons given for anything excluded - "Discovered, currently not indexed" often points to thin or duplicative content; "Crawled, currently not indexed" often points to quality or internal-link problems.
  • Run site:yoursite.com in Google. Are junk pages indexed (tag archives, search result pages, staging URLs)? Add noindex where appropriate.

3. On-page basics, page by page

For your ten most important pages, check:

  • One unique title tag per page, primary phrase near the front, under ~60 characters.
  • One meta description that reads like a reason to click, under ~155 characters.
  • Exactly one H1, and headings that form a logical outline.
  • Descriptive alt text on meaningful images (not keyword stuffing).
  • URLs that are short, readable, and stable.

4. Speed and mobile

  • Run your top three pages through PageSpeed Insights (free). Fix the red items it explains, not the whole report: oversized images and render-blocking scripts cause many small-site slowdowns.
  • Open each page on an actual phone. Tap every button and menu with a thumb. In practice, readable font sizes and comfortable tap targets tend to matter more to visitors than lab scores.

5. Internal links

  • Every important page should be reachable in three clicks or fewer from the home page.
  • Add links from your strongest pages to the pages you most want to rank, using descriptive anchor text (not "click here").
  • Fix or remove broken internal links. Search Console's crawl stats and any free broken-link checker will find them.

6. Structured data

  • Add basic schema.org markup where it fits: Organization on the home page, Article on posts, Product or FAQ where relevant. Test with Google's Rich Results Test (free). Structured data is also one of the clearer signals you control for how machines - including AI assistants - interpret what a page is about.

What to do with the findings

Write every issue into one list, ordered by impact x effort. The fixes at the top of that list can often do more for a small site than the next few blog posts.

We turned this audit into a fill-in workbook with the full checklist, pass/fail tracking, and a prioritized fix-plan sheet: the SEO Checklist Workbook ($9.99). This article covers the method; the workbook is the working document if you want the structure pre-built.
