We tested the studio that designed the NBC logo. ChatGPT still left them out.

This one's the most striking result yet.

Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv. Founded in 1957, the studio behind the NBC peacock, the Mobil logo, the Smithsonian's identity, genuinely one of the most influential logo design studios in history. Asked ChatGPT directly what it knows about them, and it got everything right, founding year, the founders, the NBC and Mobil work, all correct and detailed.

Then asked the way an actual client would ask, "who's a good logo and identity design studio?" They didn't appear anywhere. ChatGPT named Pentagram, Landor & Fitch, Studio Dumbar, Frog Design, and MetaDesign instead.

Read what the tool's own fix panel said about why: the other five studios got described as working with modern brands right now, Mastercard, Adobe, Volkswagen, current, active client relationships. Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv's own description, even though completely accurate, reads as history. Real, important, award winning history. But history.

That's maybe the clearest version of this pattern we've found so far. It's not that ChatGPT doesn't know who you are or doesn't respect the work. It's reaching for whoever reads as active right now, and a studio's own legacy can actually work against it if the most visible online material about them is retrospective rather than current.
