Nextcloud vs Immich: I Run Both, Here's the Honest Difference

Mention that you self-host your photos anywhere on the internet and two camps appear within minutes: Team Immich, telling you Nextcloud is bloated, and Team Nextcloud, pointing out that Immich does not sync your files. Both are right, which is exactly why this open-source, self-hosted comparison is confusing.

I run Nextcloud as my daily driver and have spent real time with Immich. This is not a feature-matrix review written from documentation — it is what the difference actually feels like when you live with them.

Start with what you are really replacing

The whole debate becomes simple once you answer one question: are you leaving Google Photos, or leaving Google?

Immich replaces Google Photos. Full stop. It is a focused, modern, photo-and-video library with an excellent mobile app.

Nextcloud replaces Google Drive, and along the way also covers Photos, Contacts, Calendar, and Notes. It is a platform with a photos feature, not a photos product.

If you only care about your camera roll, that distinction already made your decision for you. If you are trying to de-Google your digital life, Immich alone leaves you needing three more tools.

Where Immich is genuinely better

Let me give the Immich fans their due, because they are not imagining it:

  • The interface is beautiful. Fast, fluid, modern. Nextcloud's web UI is fine; Immich's is delightful. When you show your photo library to family, Immich looks like a product from 2026 and Nextcloud looks like a very competent file manager.
  • The ML features work well. Face recognition, object and scene search, grouping by person. Searching "beach" and actually getting beaches still feels like a small magic trick, and Immich does it out of the box.
  • It is built for one job. Timeline, map, memories, duplicates handling — everything is thought through for photos and nothing else.

On a decent machine, Immich is the better photo experience. There is no honest way around saying that.

Where Nextcloud is genuinely better

  • Files, not just media. Documents, PDFs, random folders from your laptop, sharing a directory with a colleague — Immich simply does not do this. Nextcloud does it as its core job.
  • The ecosystem. Contacts and calendar sync (CardDAV/CalDAV), desktop sync clients, notes apps, office editing. My phone's contacts and calendar live in Nextcloud too, which means one account covers what used to be four Google dependencies.
  • It is calmer to operate. Nextcloud is a conventional PHP + database app. Immich is several moving parts including an ML service, and on small ARM boards those parts matter. On my 8 GB board, Nextcloud with OPcache and Redis hums along; Immich's machine-learning jobs are noticeably heavier.

The honest trade-offs nobody mentions

Nextcloud's photos app is "good enough", not great. The Memories app narrows the gap a lot — it gives you the Google-Photos-style timeline and looks far better than the default Photos app — but face recognition and search are not at Immich's level, and on ARM they are slow. If your library is your pride and joy, you will feel that.

Immich moves fast, which cuts both ways. Frequent releases mean features arrive quickly, and it also means you should read release notes before upgrading. Nextcloud's upgrade path is slower and more predictable. Neither is a dealbreaker, but the maintenance personality is different.

Family sharing is different in spirit. Immich sharing feels like Google Photos sharing. Nextcloud sharing feels like file sharing — links, permissions, accounts. For "share the holiday album with parents", both work; Immich's is more familiar to non-technical people.

What I would do in your place

  • "I just want my photos off Google, and I want the best experience": Immich. Do not let anyone talk you into a platform you do not need.
  • "I want photos plus files, contacts, calendar — one box for my digital life": Nextcloud. Install the Memories app on day one.
  • Small ARM board, tight RAM: Nextcloud is easier to keep comfortable; if you choose Immich, be ready to tune or schedule the ML jobs.
  • Cannot decide and have the hardware: run both. Photos in Immich, everything else in Nextcloud. It is more maintenance, but some people genuinely prefer the best tool per job.

Whichever you pick, the rule that matters more than the app: your photos are not safe until they exist in more than one place. A single self-hosted server is not a backup — it is a single point of failure with a nice UI. My backup strategy guide covers that part, and it applies identically to both.

If you do not need photo sync at all, and only want controlled public links or guest uploads, the Filux file-sharing guide is a narrower fit.

If you want the full Nextcloud build I run — nginx, PostgreSQL, USB storage, Cloudflare Tunnel, zero open ports — it is all in my Google Photos replacement write-up, setup script included.
