Every year I look at the renewed CNCF map, I feel like the volume of tools available grows between 50-100%.

I spend a lot of time thinking about this because this is the problem I'm trying to solve at my startup, Taloflow. Take a category like platform engineering, for example. It's in flux; few know how to really define it and what the solutions are.

  1. Many customers come to us looking for a "platform engineering tool" with little use case definition.
  2. They may even assume that Backstage, Ambassador, and Spacelift could be directly compared, which they can't.
  3. The marketing teams at many vendors make it painfully difficult to discern what they actually do, too, and will claim they're whatever's buzzy to get more demos booked.
  4. Of course, few devs enjoy sitting in a demo call, let alone doing it 10 times, to learn whether the vendor capabilities fit the use case.
  5. Things also change so fast. What was researched and determined true about a solution a month ago could be completely different now.

It's inefficient that devs are spending weeks/months doing what's basically analyst research for their unique use case.
