This really resonates with me! I've always called it "active listening" vs. "passive listening." When I'm coding, I need instrumental music (film scores or lo-fi are my go-to) as a background hum to block out the world. But for chores like folding laundry or washing dishes, a gripping podcast or audiobook is perfect. It's exactly as you said: babysitting my brain so it doesn't get bored.
