Linux Commands — Day 1 🐧
Today marks day one of my journey toward becoming a DevOps Engineer.
I’ve started this journey with the help of KodeKloud Engineer and LabEx. My first KodeKloud task was to create a Linux user with a non-interactive shell.
Along the way, I learned about SSH (Secure Shell), different types of Linux shells, and how Linux manages users through files such as /etc/passwd.
Here are some of the commands I used:
ssh user@server
# Connect to a specific server
sudo useradd -s /sbin/nologin jim
# Create a user with a non-interactive shell
getent passwd jim
# Verify that the user was created
The output helped me understand how Linux represents users:
jim:x:1001:1001::/home/jim:/sbin/nologin
│ │ │ │ │ │ │
│ │ │ │ │ │ └── Login shell
│ │ │ │ │ └──────────── Home directory
│ │ │ │ └────────────── User information/comment
│ │ │ └─────────────────── GID
│ │ └──────────────────────── UID
│ └────────────────────────── Password placeholder
└────────────────────────────── Username
It may seem like a small task, but understanding these fundamentals is important as I continue building my Linux and DevOps skills.
Day 1 done. More to learn.
