What's the Most Boring Task You've Automated with n8n?

Most of the n8n posts I read (and most of the ones I write) are about the clever part: the LLM node, the agent loop, the prompt. But when I look at the ten small-business workflows I've built on self-hosted n8n, the ones I'd actually keep running are the dull ones.

So this is a question post, not a tutorial. I want to hear about yours.

My boring shortlist

Here are the three least exciting things I've built, and why I like them anyway.

1. Turning a weekly metrics table into a short brief. A Schedule trigger fetches the numbers over HTTP, a Code node builds a prompt, one LLM call turns them into a plain-language brief (a headline, wins, concerns, and one thing to focus on), and it gets posted to Slack. Nobody would demo this. But reading a short brief on Monday is a lot easier than opening a dashboard, and it's the kind of task that quietly stops happening when a person has to do it by hand.

2. Collecting headlines into one daily digest. Read a few RSS feeds, collect the headlines, ask the model to pick the five most relevant to a stated focus with one line on why each matters, and post the result to Slack. Again, nothing clever. The value is that the scrolling happens without anyone doing it.

3. Pulling action items out of meeting notes. Notes come in on a webhook, the model returns a JSON list of who's doing what, and the workflow sends it back. The hard part wasn't the model. It was making the output boring and predictable enough that the next step could trust it.

What boring taught me

The boring workflows are the ones where it's easiest to see when something goes wrong. When I tested my lead qualifier on fake leads, a local model happily scored an obvious SEO spam message 85 out of 100. That's the exciting kind of workflow failing in an exciting way. The digest and metrics workflows have a much smaller blast radius: if the summary is a bit off, someone shrugs and reads the numbers.

That has made me suspect the best first automation for most people isn't an AI agent at all. It's the task you do every week, resent a little, and could describe in one sentence.

Your turn

I'd love to hear:

  • What's the most boring task you've automated with n8n (or anything else)?
  • Is it still running, or did it quietly break and you never noticed?
  • Did it actually need an LLM, or was it plain nodes all the way through?

The more mundane the better. Spreadsheet cleanup, renaming files, chasing invoices, copying data between two tools that refuse to talk to each other: all welcome.

Written with AI assistance; workflow built and tested by me.
