Slop Souls - Official Trailer, fought inside the game itself

Slop Souls is our free browser soulslike: one to four knights, three bosses, and a death banner that reads "You slopped". This is its trailer, 65 seconds, cut like a slow, dark anime opening with a choir that chants the bosses' names.

How it was made

None of the footage is a screen recording. Because we own the game's source, the trailer runs the real game in a director mode:

  • The real fight, on a script. The knights are the game's own fighters, driven by its bots or by scripted input, and each boss runs its own moves when the script starts them. The game's renderer draws every frame, with its own fog, blasts and arena changes.
  • Blows on the sung words. The song is analysed for its accents and the lyrics are aligned per word. The Drummer's three slams land on "Tung Tung Tung": the moves were retimed so each contact falls on its word, and a test checks that the club head reaches the floor on all three.
  • Bosses out of the fog. Each boss stays a dark shape until its name is sung. The figures are solid; distance, mist and light do the hiding, so nothing fades in like a ghost.
  • A long lens and a letterbox. The landscape cut is 2.39:1 with long-lens cameras that stack the boss over the knight. The vertical cut drops the bars and uses the full height.
  • A staging checker. Scripted actors have no physics, so a checker lists any actor or camera that ends up inside a wall, a prop or another actor, and anyone moving faster than the game allows.
  • Offline rendering. Frames are rendered one at a time in headless Chrome at 1080p60, eight sub-frames each for motion blur, then piped to ffmpeg.
