The Conspiracy Big Software Engineering Doesn't Want You to Know

Okay, the sit-stand desk catching fire got me. Underneath the joke there's a real thing though: the reason the "AI needs a clean codebase" framing works where "please write tests" never did is that now there's a selfish payoff you can watch happen. The agent visibly does better on a well-structured repo, so the reward loop is tight instead of some virtuous someday-payoff for the next hire. Same practices, but tied to a result you see this week. Which might be the least cynical read of the whole conspiracy, that we finally found an incentive that actually lands.

A very good point! Although I do think it’s important to note that just because the benefits of discipline for humans are more delayed, it doesn’t make them any less valuable. Discipline is always worthwhile, even when it’s not at machine-speed.

There's a simpler explanation: desperation. The real goal hasn't changed - people want themselves out of the loop end-to-end, and that still doesn't work, so they'll try anything that promises it, including the fundamentals they've been dodging for twenty years. Tests don't help, by the way. Claude Code will gladly modify a failing test to match the logic it just broke.

Nice writing.

Nope. I don’t use AI to for my writing. Em dashes are some of my favorite punctuation, and I worked with a great team of editors on these articles.

Haha, it's like that time the lady tried to fool me into thinking the broccoli was an airplane! I may have been born yesterday back then, but not today, they'll never catch me!
