Concrete Slab Calculation Guide

Pouring a residential concrete slab—whether for a backyard patio, storage shed foundation, hot tub pad, or driveway—requires zero margin for mathematical error. Ordering too little concrete creates cold joints that permanently weaken the structural slab, while over-ordering ready-mix trucks leads to expensive surplus disposal charges.

The Mathematical Formula for Concrete Volume

The foundational formula for concrete volume is:
$$\text{Cubic Yards} = \frac{\text{Length (ft)} \times \text{Width (ft)} \times \text{Thickness (ft)}}{27}$$

Because slab thickness is almost universally measured in inches (such as 4 inches for sidewalks or 6 inches for heavy vehicle pads), you must first convert inches into decimal feet by dividing by 12.

  • 4 inches = 4 / 12 = 0.333 ft
  • 6 inches = 6 / 12 = 0.500 ft

Real-World Example: 12 ft × 20 ft Patio Slab (4" Thick)

  1. Compute Gross Volume: 12 × 20 × 0.333 = 79.92 cubic feet.
  2. Convert to Cubic Yards: 79.92 / 27 = 2.96 cubic yards.
  3. Apply 10% Subgrade Allowance: 2.96 × 1.10 = 3.26 cubic yards.

On rough-graded excavations, subsoil variations and form bowing will consume this extra volume completely.

Bagged Concrete vs. Ready-Mix Delivery

  • 80lb Pre-mixed Bag: Yields 0.60 cu ft. It takes 45 bags to equal 1 cubic yard.
  • 60lb Pre-mixed Bag: Yields 0.45 cu ft. It takes 60 bags to equal 1 cubic yard.

For any project requiring more than 1.5 cubic yards (~65 bags), ordering a ready-mix delivery truck saves immense physical labor and guarantees uniform compressive strength.
