Programmatic SEO at 27,854 pages: keeping every route page unique

My Fast Movers has 27,854 route pages (every state-to-state moving corridor, e.g. Texas to California). Programmatic SEO at that scale has one mortal enemy: duplicate content. Here's how we keep every page genuinely unique.

The template trap

The naive approach is one template with swapped city names. Google sees through it instantly, and worse, it's useless to humans. "Moving from {A} to {B} costs ${X}" repeated 27,854 times helps nobody.

Our rule: every page must contain at least three data points that exist nowhere else on the site.

The three-unique-things rule

Each route page combines:

  1. Corridor-specific pricing — cost tables by home size (studio through 5-bedroom), computed from our pricing model for that exact lane. A TX to CA move has different economics than TX to FL, and the numbers show it.
  2. Real migration data — US Census ACS flows for the corridor. 77,161 people moved from California to Texas in 2024. That number appears on exactly one page. It gives the page a reason to exist beyond the template.
  3. Lane-aware FAQs — not generic moving FAQs. Questions people actually ask about that corridor: drive time, best months, what's different about the destination state's regulations.

Implementation

The pages are statically generated. Build-time data pipeline:

  • Pricing model outputs per-lane cost bands (JSON, versioned)
  • Census migration tables (cleaned once, reused)
  • FAQ variants selected by lane characteristics (distance band, region pair)

Uniqueness is enforced, not hoped for. Our build script computes a similarity hash across pages and fails the build if any two pages exceed the threshold. Caught three template regressions this way before they shipped.

What actually moved the needle

Honest answer: uniqueness got us crawled, not ranked. The pages that started ranking first were the ones with real engagement signals and the ones we linked to from genuine content. Programmatic pages are inventory; links are the demand. We're building both.

The unglamorous lesson: at 27,854 pages, your build pipeline IS your SEO strategy. Invest there first.

I run My Fast Movers, an independent moving cost calculator with 27,854 route guides. We publish no address or phone; the calculator is the product.
