Binary to Text Conversion in 3 Lines of JavaScript

The 8-bit rule

Every binary-to-text conversion follows one rule: each group of 8 bits maps to an ASCII character. 01001000 01101001 = "Hi".

The core logic fits in 3 lines:

const binaryToText = (bin) =>
  bin.match(/.{1,8}/g)
     .map(b => String.fromCharCode(parseInt(b, 2)))
     .join('');
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

That's the entire algorithm. Split into 8-bit chunks, convert to decimal, map to ASCII. No API calls, no database.

Why most online converters are overkill

Search "binary translator" and the top results are wrapped in ads, newsletter popups, and daily limits. For something that runs in 200 bytes of JavaScript.

A clean alternative: bintranslate.com — client-side only, no signup, works offline once cached. Five modes: binary to text, text to binary, binary to English, ASCII, words to binary.

When you actually use this

Outside CS homework, binary conversion comes up in:

  • Reading raw network packet payloads
  • Decoding binary config files in embedded systems
  • Teaching kids how computers store text ("my name in binary")

If you're doing this by hand, you're working too hard. Bookmark a fast tool and move on.
