I Built a Real-Time El Niño Tracker for the 2026 Super El Niño

NOAA officially declared the 2026 El Niño event on June 11, with a 63% probability of reaching "super" strength by winter 2026-27. That puts this event on track to rival 1997-98 and 2015-16.

I got tired of waiting for monthly NOAA bulletins and digging through raw buoy data. So I built a free dashboard showing what's happening in the Pacific right now.

How the tracker works

The dashboard at elninoguide.com pulls the Nino 3.4 index and visualizes it on an interactive map. SST anomalies update as new data comes in from the TAO/TRITON buoy array. You can compare the current trajectory side-by-side with past super El Nino events.

What you can see

  • Dashboard: Real-time SST anomaly charts, forecast model outputs
  • ENSO Map: Interactive visualization of warm water spread
  • 2026 Forecast: Model predictions through winter 2026-27
  • Historical comparison: Current event overlaid on 1997-98 and 2015-16

Practical guides

The 2023-24 El Nino caused $100B+ in global economic losses. If 2026 reaches super strength, effects on food prices and insurance will be significant.
