The Ultimate Guide to E-commerce Backends: Firebase vs. Shopify vs. Supabase vs. Directus

The Ultimate Guide to E-commerce Backends: Firebase vs. Shopify vs. Supabase vs. Directus

If you're launching an online store today, the backend decision matters more than most sellers realize. It determines your monthly costs, how much data you actually own, and how much flexibility you have as your business grows. Whether you're a Nigerian entrepreneur watching every naira or a US/UK brand scaling internationally, this guide breaks down the four backends I build on most, and when to pick each one.
Firebase: Best for zero fees and full ownership
Firebase, Google's backend-as-a-service platform, is my default recommendation for sellers who want to own their store outright. There's no monthly subscription — you pay once for the build, and your product, order, and customer data live in a Firebase project you control directly. Firestore's real-time database also makes live stock counts and instant order notifications trivial to implement.
The trade-off: no app marketplace. If you want a one-click loyalty program or advanced email automation, you're building it custom rather than installing it. For price-sensitive sellers — whether in Lagos or London — that trade-off is usually worth it.
Supabase: Firebase's open-source, SQL-based cousin
Supabase solves the same problem as Firebase but on a Postgres foundation instead of a NoSQL document store. If your business logic involves complex relational data — multi-vendor marketplaces, detailed inventory hierarchies, or reporting that benefits from real SQL queries — Supabase often fits more naturally than Firestore's document model. Like Firebase, it has a generous free tier and no forced monthly cost for the store itself.
Shopify: Best for ecosystem and speed to launch
Shopify remains the strongest choice when you want to lean on a mature app ecosystem rather than build everything from scratch. Thousands of apps handle reviews, upsells, subscription billing, and advanced email flows with a one-click install. Checkout is polished and trusted by customers worldwide, and built-in payment processing supports dozens of currencies out of the box — a real advantage for international sellers who need multi-currency support without custom integration work.
The cost is the monthly subscription, which runs indefinitely regardless of how much the store changes month to month. For sellers who value speed and ecosystem access over long-term cost, that's a fair trade.
Directus: Best for teams that need a real admin backend
Directus is a headless CMS that wraps any SQL database with an instant, fully customizable admin panel. It's less commonly discussed in e-commerce circles, but it's a strong choice when a client needs a genuinely flexible content and data management interface — for example, a store with complex product categorization, multilingual content, or content-heavy pages beyond a standard catalog. Like Supabase, there's no forced platform fee; hosting costs are yours to control.
What about global payments?
Regardless of backend, the payment layer needs to match your actual customer base. For Nigerian and African sellers, Paystack and Flutterwave remain the strongest local options. For international sellers, Stripe and PayPal cover the vast majority of markets, and Wise is worth adding for businesses that need to receive and hold multiple currencies without excessive conversion fees. I build all four backends to support whichever combination of gateways fits the seller's actual customer geography — this isn't a Nigeria-only or US-only decision, it's a "who is actually buying from you" decision.
My recommendation for 80% of clients
If you're building a new store and don't yet have a hard requirement pulling you toward Shopify's app ecosystem, I recommend Firebase. Zero monthly fees, full data ownership, and a custom admin panel built around exactly how your business operates will save meaningful money over the store's lifetime for the majority of sellers I work with — whether they're in Lagos, London, or Los Angeles. Reach for Shopify when you know in advance you'll depend heavily on specific apps, or when checkout trust at scale matters more than ownership.
