The App That Can Drain Your Bank Account in Seconds

Some of the most dangerous apps are the ones that look completely normal. Fake payment apps, QR scanners, photo editors, VPNs, “earn money” apps, and even fake bank apps can secretly steal your banking details.

These malicious apps are often called banking trojans. They are designed to collect passwords, OTPs, SMS messages, banking app details, and even control parts of your phone without you knowing. Many of them ask for permissions like Accessibility access, SMS access, screen recording, or “draw over other apps.” Once enabled, they can silently monitor what you type and even create fake banking login screens.

Scammers usually spread these apps through WhatsApp links, Telegram messages, fake APK files, or suspicious websites. Some malicious apps pretend to be bank apps, government apps, delivery apps, or fake update tools. In India, attackers have been using social engineering messages to trick users into installing these apps on Android phones.

In one recent case, a woman lost more than Rs 2 lakh after downloading a fake APK file sent as a “wedding card.” In another case, a fake RTO e-challan app led to losses of more than Rs 10 lakh.

Warning signs include unusual battery drain, higher data usage, phone overheating, pop-ups, unexpected permissions, or banking apps behaving strangely. Experts recommend downloading apps only from official stores, avoiding APK files, denying unnecessary permissions, and keeping Google Play Protect enabled.
