Aave completes staged reopening of 292 reserves after emergency freeze
Aave governance has completed a staged reopening of the protocol on 30 October, one day after guardians suspended new deposits and borrowing across 175 V3 reserves on 16 networks and 117 V4 reserves on 4 networks. The emergency restrictions were applied in stages on 29 October between 21:42 and 23:04 UTC and covered 292 reserves in total, including deployments on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, Optimism, Polygon and BNB Chain.
The freeze was partial by design. Throughout the restriction window, withdrawals, loan repayments and liquidations remained fully available, so depositors kept access to their funds and existing positions continued to operate normally. The permissioned Horizon market for tokenised real-world assets also stayed open.
The action followed a single protocol-level trigger: on 29 October a wallet linked to the Binance exchange theft deposited 60,000,000 USDT into Aave V3 on Ethereum Core and borrowed 19,762 WETH, about USD 44.6 million at the time. The position remained over-collateralised, and no depositor losses were recorded.
Guardians used emergency powers rather than a standard multi-day governance vote, with freeze transactions executed by guardian multisignature wallets starting roughly 40 minutes after the borrow event. Aave Labs, TokenLogic and Certora coordinated the response as a joint group, choosing a market-wide freeze over selective pauses to prevent stolen tokens from being deposited into other pools.
The staged unfreeze completed on 30 October, restoring new deposits and borrowing across all affected reserves with two precautionary adjustments. First, 9 assets, including USDT and USDC, remain at an LTV of 0 for new borrowing, meaning they cannot be used as collateral to open new debt positions until the restriction is lifted. Second, borrow caps were cut, removing about USD 3.83 billion of unused borrow capacity across V3 and V4 markets. For example, the borrow cap for USDT on Ethereum Core now stands at 2.56 billion USDT.
IMPACT
โข Depositor funds stayed accessible throughout the freeze through withdrawals and repayments.
โข No depositor losses. The borrowed position stayed over-collateralised and remained subject to standard liquidation rules.
โข New deposits and borrowing are restored across all 292 affected reserves.
โข USDT, USDC and 7 other assets remain temporarily at LTV 0 for new borrowing.
โข About USD 3.83 billion in unused borrow capacity has been removed while the risk review continues.
For compliance teams, the episode documents a functioning emergency-control chain for decentralised market infrastructure: rapid detection, guardian-level isolation, preservation of exit functions for users, and staged restoration with conservative parameters while the review continues. Attribution questions around the underlying theft remain outside the scope of this note.
