What happened
Canva has launched Brush, a design-editing model and the company's second home-grown AI model, following Craft, its image generation model. Within the same week, days after the Brush launch, Canva announced an expanded partnership with OpenAI built around broader access to the GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6 models. The two moves landing back to back capture the central strategic question facing design platforms in the AI era: which capabilities to build in-house and which to buy from frontier labs.
The numbers
Per Canva, Brush is up to 69 percent faster than the company's previous design agent and 46 percent cheaper per edit, and the model is available to Canva Pro subscribers. The figures are vendor-reported and have not been independently benchmarked, but they outline the economics Canva is chasing: faster iteration cycles at a lower cost per operation than third-party agents, with the savings directed at the subscription tiers where design work actually happens.
How it works
Brush handles design editing โ layout changes, element adjustments and style reworks โ while Craft remains the company's generative image model. The expanded OpenAI partnership keeps frontier capabilities one integration away: the deal gives Canva broader access to GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6, with the two companies working to make the models more economical to run, and OpenAI systems already power features such as Canva Code. The split mirrors a portfolio approach, with in-house models where Canva has domain data and call volume, and partner models where general capability matters more than specialization.
IMPACT
Context makes the strategy legible. In August, Canva cut its revenue growth forecast from 30 percent to 20 percent, citing over-reliance on frontier models โ a cost and dependency problem, not a demand problem. Brush and Craft are the response: owning the editing and generation paths lowers per-edit costs and reduces exposure to external pricing decisions. The build-versus-buy balance is now explicit at Canva, and the same calculation sits in front of every design platform that currently routes most of its AI features through one or two frontier providers.
