ChatGPT learns animated GIFs
OpenAI is rolling out Images 2.6, per the company announcement of 4 November 2026 covered by The Verge. The headline feature lands directly in ChatGPT: animated GIFs generated in one step, either from a text prompt or from an uploaded photo. After generation, users can edit the animation speed and adjust individual frames. Motion output therefore becomes part of the default generative stack rather than a task you assemble in a separate editor, and that changes the shape of everyday media work inside the assistant.
Flare and Sunburst on the API
The API side receives two new models in the GPT-Image-2.6 family. Per OpenAI, Flare is tuned for fast generation and Sunburst for quality, so application builders and agent developers choose between latency and fidelity instead of living with a single compromise setting. For automation engineers this turns image generation into a callable pipeline step with a predictable profile, which is what production media pipelines need for capacity planning and routing.
The scale behind the feature
Users generate more than 4 billion images per week through ChatGPT and the API, company-reported by OpenAI, up from 3 billion in September. A feature like animated GIFs is not an experiment on top of that base. Per OpenAI, it is available to all ChatGPT users and inside Codex on web, desktop and mobile, which puts animation in front of the entire user base from the start.
Why it matters for automation
The generative stack is consolidating around a single call. What used to be a multi-tool workflow โ generate a still image, export it, animate it in another tool, tune the frame timing, re-export โ collapses into one prompt plus a few edit controls. Fewer external dependencies in media pipelines, fewer handoff points where state can break, and one vendor surface to monitor instead of several. Animated output is now table stakes in consumer generative tools, and the consumption curve keeps moving in one direction. The practical consequence for platform teams is that media routing prices motion as its own format, with its own place in capacity planning.
