Netflix announced a new AI Discover tab on Tuesday, November 3. The company's own announcement describes it as a new tab in the TV app where a small group of members can try new ways to find their next watch. The first experimental feature inside it is mood-based recommendations built on themed collections โ€” the launch set includes 'scare me', 'family movie night' and 'quick watches' โ€” and every theme is previewed with a clip from a show or movie, so browsing starts before any title page is opened. Picking a theme brings up matching recommendations, more specific themes can be layered on until something fits, and a 'something different' option resets the set.

The tab runs on a new intelligence layer that Netflix says responds to what members tell it in real time and keeps learning as they use it. Each title carries a 'Tune Your Recommendations' button next to 'Play' and 'My List' โ€” viewers can keep a recommendation that landed or ask the system not to suggest a title again, and per Netflix that exclusion applies inside AI Discover rather than across the whole service. Variety reports the recommended titles are produced in real time based on viewing history, personal preferences and what is trending on the platform. Netflix adds that AI helps create the themes members see and that the service explains its results along the way.

The rollout starts narrow: per TechCrunch, AI Discover is initially available in the US, in English, on supported TVs and TV streaming devices, with Netflix planning to extend it to more members and regions in the coming weeks. Members with access see a Discover entry with a red gem icon and a New label in the TV app's top navigation, per Variety, and the feature is not available in Kids profiles. Netflix frames the tab as an optional test space for new discovery formats โ€” its announcement calls it a test kitchen where usage and feedback decide which experiments are kept โ€” while the standard home experience stays unchanged for members without access.

Key figures

IMPACT: mood-first discovery moves the entry point from title names to viewer intent, and clips inside results shorten the path from query to play, which is where streaming discovery usually loses viewers.
