Perplexity has launched Teammates, always-on agents built to hold multiple roles within a workspace at the same time. The Verge reported the launch on November 5. The core idea is persistence. A conventional assistant session ends when the window closes, and its context goes with it. A Teammate stays on, keeps the state of its assignments, and can carry several distinct roles in parallel, which changes the unit of work from a single question to an ongoing collaboration.
The design leans on what a team has already accumulated. Teammates reuse existing Perplexity projects, skills and memory, so knowledge captured in earlier work carries into new assignments instead of being rebuilt from scratch each time. They also build on Perplexity Computer, the system that deploys agents on your device, adding collaboration and ongoing large-scale work on top of that base. In other words, the same runtime that ran individual agent sessions is being extended into a longer-lived, multi-role form.
Interaction follows the shape of normal teamwork. Each Teammate gets its own thread in the Perplexity app, and users can interact with them in Slack as well. Putting agents into Slack threads matters because coordination in most engineering organizations already happens there, so an agent that lives in the channel behaves more like a colleague in the discussion than a separate tool to switch to. The multiple-roles point deserves attention too. Because one Teammate can hold several roles at once, the mental model is closer to staffing a small team than spawning disposable task runs, and the workspace becomes the boundary within which these agents persist.
Two qualifiers matter for adoption planning. First, the feature requires the $200 per month Max subscription, which positions it at the top tier rather than as a broadly included capability. Second, the long-term scale is a stated vision for the future and not a shipped feature. CEO Aravind Srinivas said that over time the company envisions every org having hundreds of teammates working for each person. What ships today is persistent, role-holding agents within a workspace, and the hundreds-per-person scenario remains a declared direction rather than a configurable setting.
IMPACT
The practical shift for engineers is from one-off chats to persistent agents that carry project context and operate inside existing communication channels. Budget for the $200 per month Max tier if you plan to evaluate, and treat the hundreds-of-teammates vision as a roadmap statement, not a feature available today.
