Visa has launched the Visa Agentic Commerce Benchmark, a testing framework that puts AI shopping agents through realistic buying scenarios, per usa.visa.com on November 5, 2026. The company describes it as a first-of-its-kind industry benchmark for agentic commerce and opens it beyond Visa's own runs β people can take the test as well. In the first round, 22 AI models from 12 labs ran 15 realistic shopping challenges, such as buying a TV, a laptop or a personal care appliance. Each agent has to uncover the customer's requirements through conversation, and if nothing fits, the correct behavior is not to buy.
The results, per Visa, show a wide gap between what agentic shopping demos suggest and what models deliver under structured tests. Across the first round, models failed 42.8% of test runs. The spread is large: the best models passed 82.2% of attempts, the worst 28.9%. The more telling number is repeatability β every model got three attempts per scenario, and all three attempts passed only 34.2% of the time. Per Visa, consistency, not capability, is the core bottleneck.
The failure pattern matters as much as the failure rate. Per Visa, 54% of failed runs still ended in a purchase that missed the customer's requirements β the agent recommended a product that did not match, or bought before uncovering all requirements. The typical failure is silent from the user's point of view: money moves while the outcome diverges from what was asked. Visa says the benchmark will next extend testing to checkout, payment and order placement.
All figures come from Visa's own benchmark and should be read as vendor-reported. The release was covered the same day by PYMNTS and TheNextWeb, citing the same topline numbers.
Impact: for teams building shopping and commerce agents, the benchmark formalizes a test most projects still lack β repeated trials of identical scenarios with explicit scoring of whether the purchase matched the requirements. The 34.2% all-three-attempts rate means single-run demos overstate reliability, and the 54% silent-failure share means evaluation has to check requirement completeness, not just that a transaction completed. For merchants and payment providers, the work explains why agent-facing trust layers and confirmation flows are moving onto roadmaps as agentic commerce grows.
