Automating End-to-End Pull Request Workflows with Claude Task Master

Introduction

Claude Task Master (claudetm) is a command-line tool that keeps Claude working until a goal is achieved. It plans, codes, opens pull requests, handles CI failures, addresses review comments, and merges when everything passes. The tool is built on the Claude Agent SDK and works with the Claude Code session or a direct Anthropic-compatible API.

How It Works

The workflow follows four stages: planning, working, PR lifecycle, and verification. In the planning stage the CLI scans the codebase, creates a task list, and defines success criteria. During working it makes changes, runs tests, commits, and pushes to a branch. The PR lifecycle stage opens a pull request, waits for CI checks, fixes failures, and responds to review comments. Finally verification runs the test suite and lint checks before declaring the task complete.

Quick Start

# Install via pip, uv, or Docker
uv tool install claude-task-master

# Authenticate with Claude Code
claude login

# Run a task in your project
cd your-project
claudetm start "Add user authentication with tests"
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

The CLI will create a branch, push commits, open a PR, and keep the loop running until the tests pass and the PR is approved.

Using Profiles for Parallel Subscriptions

Claude Task Master supports isolated profiles. An oauth profile stores a separate Claude Code configuration under ~/.claudetm/profiles/<name>/. An api-key profile injects ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL. This lets multiple teams run different Claude subscriptions on the same machine without conflict.

# Create a new profile
claudetm profile add myteam --type oauth

# Use the profile for a task
claudetm --profile myteam start "Refactor payment module"
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Extending with REST API and Webhooks

The tool also runs an MCP server and a REST API that expose the same lifecycle programmatically. Webhooks are HMAC-signed, allowing external systems to receive updates on task progress, CI results, and merge events. This makes it easy to embed Claude Task Master into CI pipelines, dashboards, or custom bots.

Conclusion

Claude Task Master provides a hands-off, PR-based development experience that survives interruptions and supports multiple isolated Claude subscriptions. It is open source under the MIT license and can be installed via PyPI or Docker. Check the repository for more details and contribute if you see an opportunity to improve it.
