Automating PR-Based Development with Claude Task Master

Automating PR-Based Development with Claude Task Master

Claude Task Master (CLI claudetm) is an autonomous orchestration layer built on the Claude Agent SDK. It keeps Claude working until a goal is achieved, handling the entire pull-request lifecycle from planning to verification. This article explains how the tool works, why it matters for modern development teams, and how to integrate it into existing pipelines.

Core Workflow

When you invoke claudetm start "<goal>" the CLI reads the repository, creates a task list, and defines success criteria. Each task results in a commit that is pushed to a new branch and opened as a pull request. The tool then monitors CI checks, addresses failures, and responds to review comments. When the PR is approved, it can auto-merge based on configuration. All state is persisted, allowing the process to survive interruptions and resume exactly where it left off.

# Example: add user authentication with tests
cd my-project
claudetm start "Add user authentication with tests"
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

The command above triggers a full cycle: planning, coding, testing, PR creation, CI handling, and final verification. No manual git commands are required after the initial start.

Profiles for Parallel Subscriptions

Claude Task Master supports multiple isolated profiles. An oauth profile creates a separate Claude Code configuration directory, preventing credential clashes when two subscriptions run simultaneously. An api-key profile lets you point the CLI at any Anthropic-compatible endpoint by setting ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL. This flexibility is useful for teams that experiment with different Claude models or run separate CI pipelines.

Extending the System

The tool exposes a REST API, an MCP server, and HMAC-signed webhooks. These interfaces allow external systems to dispatch new tasks, monitor progress, or react to events such as PR creation or CI failure. For example, a dashboard can poll the API for task status and display a live progress bar.

{
  "task_id": "12345",
  "status": "working",
  "current_step": "fixing CI failure"
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Integrations can also trigger claudetm merge-pr <PR#> to take ownership of an existing PR and automate its merge loop, as demonstrated by the project's own PRs #147-#150.

When to Use Claude Task Master

  • Teams already using Claude Code that want end-to-end PR automation.
  • Projects with well-scoped goals and explicit success criteria.
  • Organizations running multiple Claude subscriptions that need isolation.

If these conditions match your workflow, Claude Task Master can reduce manual overhead and keep development moving forward even when interruptions occur.

Getting Started

Install the CLI via uv, pip, or Docker. Authenticate with Claude using claude login. Then start a task with a clear goal description. The tool will handle the rest, opening PRs, fixing CI, and merging when ready.

uv tool install claude-task-master
claude login
claudetm start "Implement feature X with tests"
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode
