**This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine
What I Built
SysAmp v2.91 is a full-stack system observability deck and Docker container orchestrator resurrected in the spirit of the iconic 1997 Winamp 2.x interface, infused with local open-weight AI.
The Interpretation of the Theme: Ghost in the Machine
For this challenge, we asked ourselves: What if the ghosts haunting our machines aren't spooky apparitions, but the beloved software spirits of the early internet?
In 1997, Winamp was on every developer's screen. Today, developers stare at sterile, cold cloud metric dashboards and heavy Electron containers. SysAmp brings the ghost of Winamp back to life — not as a retro skin, but as a living, breathing telemetry cockpit. Every pixelated EQ band now channels live CPU core voltages and RAM pressure, and the legendary "Whip the Llama" slogan is reborn through an on-device Google Gemma AI doctor that diagnoses dead and crashed Docker containers.

-
Local Walkthrough:
- Dual-Mode Visualizer: Real-time 18-bar segmented LED Spectrum Analyzer (Green $\rightarrow$ Yellow $\rightarrow$ Red) and an Oscilloscope waveform driven by actual hardware clock speed.
- 10-Band Hardware Equalizer: Sliders dynamically driven by CPU Cores 1–4, RAM, Swap, Disk I/O, and Network Rx/Tx throughput.
- Playlist Editor as Container Manager: Play (Start), Pause (Freeze), and Stop containers with authentic retro beeps via the Web Audio API.
- Windowshade Mini-Mode: Double-click the title bar to collapse into a sleek 14px horizontal status strip for non-intrusive desktop monitoring.
- ⚡ "Whip the Llama" AI Doctor: One-click instant diagnostic query sending crashed container logs to local Gemma, which streams 1-sentence fixes across the green LED marquee.
-
Playlist Exporter: Exports running containers as a production-ready
docker-compose.yml(#EXTM3Uheader format).
Code
The complete source code is open source and available on GitHub:
Architecture Overview:
- Frontend: React 19, Vite, Tailwind CSS v4, Lucide Icons, HTML5 Canvas, Web Audio API synthesizer.
-
Backend Bridge: Node.js, Express (Port 4091),
systeminformationfor safe cross-platform hardware telemetry, dockerodefor Docker socket communication. -
Smart Fallback Engine: If the Docker daemon is offline, SysAmp smoothly falls back to live host OS process tracking (
pid-*) without crashing. -
Local Inference: Native HTTP client interfacing with Ollama's local REST endpoint (
localhost:11434) runninggemma3:4b.
How I Built It
1. Open-Weight AI Core: Google Gemma (gemma3:4b)
At the heart of SysAmp's AI Doctor is Google's open-weight Gemma model (gemma3:4b quantized at Q4_K_M), running locally via Ollama.
When an engineer clicks the lightning bolt (⚡) or when a container crashes:
- SysAmp extracts stderr/stdout logs and container metadata (exit codes, memory caps, port conflicts).
- It prompts local Gemma to act as a Unix systems engineer:
You are SysAmp AI Doctor. Analyze this Docker container and give a 1-sentence root cause and exact CLI fix command.
Container: worker-queue-service (node:20-alpine)
Status: EXITED
Recent Logs: FATAL ERROR: Reached heap limit Allocation failed - JavaScript heap out of memory
- Gemma identifies the root cause (e.g.,
Exit Code 137 OOMKilled) and provides an immediate remediation command (docker update --memory 512m ...). - The response streams live across the vintage green LED marquee screen and into the diagnostic drawer.
2. Dual-Engine Telemetry Bridge
Built with Node.js and systeminformation, the backend maps real hardware load onto Winamp's 10-band equalizer sliders:
- Bands 1–4: Core loads for CPU 0 through CPU 3
- Band 5: Physical RAM utilization %
- Band 6: Swap usage %
- Band 7: Disk transfer pressure
- Bands 8–9: Active network I/O (Rx/Tx KB/s)
- Band 10: Total CPU percentage
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Why does open innovation matter for a system monitoring deck?
- Production Infrastructure Privacy: System logs, crash dumps, and internal Docker configurations contain sensitive tokens, internal IPs, and proprietary source snippets. Streaming these to a proprietary third-party cloud API introduces massive compliance and security risks. By running Gemma locally, zero telemetry ever leaves the machine.
- Air-Gapped & Offline Resilience: When your network interface drops or an outage hits your internet connection, a cloud-dependent AI assistant is dead in the water. An open-weight model running on localhost operates with 100% fidelity even when the network cable is unplugged.
- Zero Marginal Cost: Observability software shouldn't incur per-token SaaS subscription billing just to watch a service loop or inspect a container log. Open-weight models empower individual hackers and home-lab enthusiasts to have world-class AI diagnosis without a credit card.
My Agent Session

The Spirit of It
There was something unforgettable about 1997. Software was tactile, responsive, idiosyncratic, and fun. It had pixel fonts, beveled chrome buttons, and green phosphor readouts. When Winamp launched with "Winamp, it really whips the llama's ass!", it captured the rebel spirit of early open computing.
Building SysAmp v2.91 was like holding a digital séance: summoning the spirit of Nullsoft Winamp into the era of containerized microservices and on-device generative AI. When you click play and hear the 8-bit square wave beep while your CPU core stats dance across the spectrum analyzer, software feels magical again.
