In the tech world, your portfolio is your main weapon. Unlike other fields that rely on degrees or certificates, web development greatly values what you can build. A strong portfolio can open up job opportunities even before you finish formal education. But how do you build a portfolio that is truly attractive in the eyes of recruiters and clients?

Why Is a Portfolio So Important?

Imagine two candidates applying for the same position. Candidate A has a Computer Science degree with a high GPA. Candidate B is a high school graduate who learned on their own but has 5 real web projects that can be visited directly. At many tech companies, Candidate B actually draws more attention. A portfolio proves that you can produce something real, not just know the theory.

1. Choose the Right Projects to Showcase

Don't show every project you've ever made. Curate strictly and choose 3-6 of your best projects that broadly demonstrate your abilities. Criteria for a good portfolio project:

  • Solves a real problem or has a clear use case
  • Can be visited and tried directly (deployed/live)
  • Has code that can be viewed on GitHub
  • Demonstrates skills relevant to the position you're targeting

Quality is far more important than quantity. Three outstanding projects are better than ten mediocre ones.
