The Marine Operating System Built for the Future

Your phone has an operating system. So does your laptop, your car's infotainment screen and your TV. Boats are the exception. A modern recreational boat can carry a chartplotter, a depth sounder, engine gauges, an AIS receiver, a VHF radio, cameras and a stereo, and almost none of them talk to each other in a way the owner can use.

d3kOS was built to change that. It is an open-source marine operating system that runs on a Raspberry Pi at the helm and turns the data already on your boat into one connected, intelligent system.

The Problem with Today's Marine Technology

Marine electronics have grown one box at a time. Each device solves one problem well, but together they leave the boater with:

  • Fragmented displays. Engine data is on one screen, the chart on another, and cameras somewhere else.

  • Closed ecosystems. Many devices only share data fully with equipment from the same manufacturer.

  • Data with no context. The engine sensor knows the coolant temperature, but nothing on the boat knows whether that temperature is normal for this engine at this RPM.

  • No single place to ask a question. If you want to know what a warning means, you usually have to dig through a paper manual.

The data exists. What's missing is a layer that collects it, makes sense of it and presents it in one place.

Why Boats Need an Operating System

An operating system does three jobs: it manages hardware, runs applications, and gives the user one consistent interface. A vessel operating system does the same for a boat:

  • Manages hardware: GPS receivers, NMEA 2000 adapters, AIS receivers, IP cameras, microphones and speakers.

  • Runs marine applications: charts, engine monitoring, anchor watch, collision advisory, voice assistance and logging.

  • Gives one interface: a single touchscreen dashboard at the helm, plus remote access from a phone.

d3kOS ships as a complete image for the SD card. You flash it, boot the Pi, and a setup wizard walks you through configuring the vessel. No programming is needed after installation.

What d3kOS Includes Today

The current release (v0.9.9.5.1, October 2026) provides these tools on the helm touchscreen:

d3kOS supports 18 display languages and runs on the Raspberry Pi 3B+, 4B and 5 (4 GB RAM minimum).

Signal K Integration: The Data Foundation

d3kOS is built on Signal K, the open marine data standard. Signal K takes data from NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 devices and turns it into a consistent, web-friendly JSON data model. Every value, whether speed over ground, depth or engine RPM, has a predictable address and consistent units.

This is why d3kOS works with existing equipment instead of replacing it. Your chartplotter, depth sounder and engine sensors keep doing their jobs. d3kOS reads what they already broadcast. (See How Signal K and d3kOS Create the Digital Vessel.)

AI-Native Architecture

Most marine software adds AI as an afterthought. d3kOS was designed around it from the start:

  • Helm voice assistant. On-device speech recognition (Vosk) and speech synthesis (Piper), with the Gemini language model for answers when a connection is available.

  • Retrieval from your own manuals. Upload a PDF and Helm can answer questions from it.

  • Offline fallback. With no internet, Helm still answers from its local knowledge base. That matters on the water, where connectivity is never guaranteed.

  • Computer vision. The Forward Watch plugin uses a custom-trained YOLOv8 model to detect ships, boats, buoys, kayaks, logs and debris from a bow camera.

  • Governed autonomy. Every automated action follows the AAO methodology, a framework that limits what AI is allowed to do, logs every action and guarantees recovery.

Built to Stay Current

d3kOS updates itself over the air. Updates are signed packages that are checked with an ECDSA signature and a SHA-256 integrity check before they install. If a health check fails afterwards, the update rolls back automatically, and the installer refuses to "update" to an older version. You don't need to swap SD cards or open a terminal.

Future Roadmap

The d3kOS roadmap is driven by real on-water testing. Areas in active development include:

  • More Forward Watch model training on real-world marine footage

  • Expanded SafeHelm collision-avoidance capability

  • More engine-sensor integration options for boats without NMEA 2000 engine data

  • Research into short-range proximity sensing for small craft

Important Safety Note

d3kOS is not a certified navigation instrument. It is an aid to awareness and does not replace proper seamanship, certified charts, a proper lookout, or the equipment the law requires. AI answers can be wrong. Never rely on them for safety-critical decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is d3kOS open source? Yes. d3kOS is released under the GNU GPL v3. A separate commercial licence is available for bundling it with hardware for resale.

Does d3kOS replace my chartplotter? No. d3kOS works alongside your existing electronics. It reads their data through Signal K and adds intelligence on top.

Does d3kOS need the internet? No. Core functions work offline. An internet connection adds Gemini AI answers, weather maps and remote access.
