Structured Interview ... !!!

Tell me about a time you worked with a team to solve a problem.

STAR :

    1.Situation
    2.Task
    3.Action
    4.Result

I know how to evaluate the individual strengths of my associates, communicate well with them, and coordinate my efforts to support theirs.

I prefer to work as a team member, because I believe that the best ideas are developed in partnership with others. I’m equally comfortable being a team member and a team lead – a few months ago I was selected to lead our team in a deadline-critical implementation project. Because of our great teamwork, we were able to produce our deliverables to the client well before deadline.

Tell me about a time when someone gave you difficult feedback. How did you handle it?

When delivering negative feedback, it is important to consider how other people may interpret it. Make sure you won’t be misunderstood; evaluate how it will affect them.

Keep in mind that giving negative feedback is not just about giving criticism. It’s about how you deliver the information to help people understand what needs to be done. Will the negative feedback have a long-term effect?

Emphasize that you want to communicate effectively when giving out negative feedback. This requires sensitivity, following up, and remaining open to lessons from the experience.

Don’t forget to show the recruiter how you approach these situations. It is important to have forethought, sensitivity and good communication skills, no matter what the feedback.

It is important to prove to your recruiter that you are not afraid of giving negative feedback to those under your command. Since you’ll be managing a certain department, it is appropriate to reprimand someone who’s not being productive at work. However, it all comes down to how you approach that person and make a positive impact, even if the feedback is somewhat negative. That is a talent and a skill every manager should have.

Understand that giving negative feedback is necessary, even though no one looks forward to those moments. Keep in mind that it’s important to adjust and communicate with your colleagues on a professional level to avoid hurting them emotionally.

Example :

One of our employees started frequently coming in late to work. I explained to her why I was concerned about this behavior — it violated our policies and

negatively affected her co-workers. She acknowledged the problem, and I asked if there was a reason for the change from her usual punctuality. After she

explained that a family caregiving situation was the issue, we agreed that she would give early notice on days with potential scheduling issues, and we

would work on adjusting her scheduling a few days each week.

How would you handle a situation where you were presented with new material or a new task but you didn't understand it?

If you find that it's the task orders you don't understand, you ask the supervisor questions until you understand what is being asked of you.

If you find that you understand the orders, but you don't have the ability/understanding to complete the task itself, then you tell the supervisor that you don't have the knowledge to complete the task.

You may be able to find time to learn how before the task must be completed.

Or you may be able to work with someone else who can help enough to make up for your lack of knowledge. Or the task may need to be assigned elsewhere.

What steps would you take to make an important decision on the job?

1. Identify Your Goal :

One of the most effective decision making strategies is to keep an eye on your goal.

This simply means identifying the purpose of your decision by asking yourself what exactly is the problem that needs to be solved? And why does this problem need to be solved?

Figuring out what's most important to you will help you make good decisions.

When you know the reason why you have making a particular decision; it will better serve you in staying with it, and defending it.

2. Gather Information for Weighing Your Options

When making good decisions it is best to gather necessary information that is directly related to the problem.

Doing this will help you to better understand what needs to be done in solving the problem, and will also help to generate ideas for a possible solution.

3. Consider the Consequences

This step can be just as important as step one because it will help you determine how your final decision will impact yourself, and/or others involved.

In this step, you will be asking yourself what is likely to be the results of your decision.

How will it affect you now? And how will it affect your future?

4. Make Your Decision

Now that you have identified your goal, gathered all necessary information, and weighed the consequences, it is time to make a choice and actually execute your final decision.

Understanding that this step can cause some people a lot of anxiety is important because this is where you have to trust your instincts.

5. Evaluate Your Decision

Once you have made your final decision and put it into action, it is necessary to evaluate the decision and the steps you have taken to ensure that it works.

This final step is probably just as important as step one, if not more important, because it will help you to further develop your decision making skills for future problems.

How have you demonstrated leadership ability when you were not in a leadership role?

I naturally take on a leader and mentor-ship type of role with my co-workers.

In one instance, I had a new coworker who was having some troubles fitting in.

I took her out for lunch and talked to her a bit about the workplace culture and semantics surrounding the various departments.

I wanted her to stay and enjoy her employment with us, so I took the responsibility of ensuring she was settling in well.

I believe there are always opportunities for leadership - you have to keep your eyes open!
