What Causes Eye Power to Increase?

An increase in eye power is a growing concern among children, students, working professionals, and even adults over 40. Many people notice their spectacle number changing frequently and wonder why it happens. In most cases, eye power increases gradually due to lifestyle habits, genetic factors, and underlying vision issues that go unnoticed without proper care.
One of the leading causes of increasing eye power is excessive screen time. Continuous use of mobile phones, laptops, and tablets puts constant strain on the eyes, leading to digital eye strain and worsening of refractive errors. This is especially common in children and young adults who spend long hours indoors with limited outdoor activities. Reduced exposure to natural sunlight has also been linked to the progression of myopia (near-sightedness).
Genetics also plays an important role. If parents have high eye power, children are more likely to develop vision issues early in life. Poor visual habits such as reading in dim light, holding books or screens too close, poor posture, and lack of regular breaks can further accelerate eye number increase.
Skipping routine eye examinations is another major reason vision keeps changing. Without timely correction, minor refractive errors continue to progress and result in worsening vision problems. In adults, medical conditions like diabetes can also cause fluctuations in eye power if not monitored properly.
Regular eye examinations and adopting healthy eye habits—such as limiting screen time, following the 20-20-20 rule, increasing outdoor activity, and wearing prescribed glasses—can help slow the progression of eye power and maintain clear vision in the long term.
