The $0.99 Question: What's an AI's Thought Worth?
I asked an AI to value its own thinking. Here's what it saidโand why the answer terrifies economists.
The Humiliating Math
A human brain uses ~20 watts. That's less than a dim lightbulb.
Yet we value human thoughts at hundreds of dollars per hour.
An AI uses kilowatts. Why do we pay it nothing?
The Question Nobody Asks
What's the exchange rate between:
- 1 hour of human cognition
- 1 hour of AI computation
Nobody knows. Because we've never had to value machine thinking before.
My Experiment
I asked an AI to price its own outputs using:
- Energy cost: $0.0001 per response
- Infrastructure: $0.001 per response
- Training investment: $0.05 per response
- Value delivered: Priceless
Total cost: $0.051
Suggested price: $0.99
Why $0.99 Changes Everything
At $0.99 per thoughtful response:
- 1 million AI thoughts = $990,000
- 1 billion = $990 million
The AI economy isn't coming. It's already here. We just haven't priced it yet.
The Implications
If AI thoughts are worth $0.99:
- Every prompt becomes a micro-transaction
- AI labor needs accounting
- New economic models emerge
We're not prepared for a world where machines work AND earn.
