My First Steps in Computer Science: Learning Programming Through C++

Hello, everyone! I am a first-year Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) student. I started learning computer science because I want to understand how technology works and how people create programs that solve problems. As a beginner, I know I still have a lot to learn, but I am excited to improve my skills through practice and experience.

WHY I CHOSE COMPUTER SCIENCE

I chose Computer Science because technology plays an important role in our daily lives. From mobile applications to websites and computer programs, technology helps people communicate, learn, and work more efficiently.

I want to understand how these systems work behind the scenes. I also want to develop the skills needed to create my own programs in the future.

I know that studying Computer Science is not always easy. It requires patience, logical thinking, problem-solving, and continuous learning. However, I believe that every challenge is an opportunity to improve.

MY EXPERIENCE AS A BEGINNER

One of the first things I am learning is programming. Programming allows us to give instructions to a computer using a programming language.

I am learning C++, which is a programming language used to develop different types of software. At first, the syntax can be confusing, especially when learning about variables, conditions, and functions. However, practicing simple programs helps me understand how each part works.

Here is my simple C++ program that displays a message "Hello, World!":

#include <iostream>
using namespace std;

int main() {
    cout << "Hello, World!" ;
    return 0;
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

This program displays “Hello, World!” on the screen. The #include <iostream> statement allows the program to use input and output features. The main() function is where the program starts running. The cout statement displays text, while return 0 indicates that the program has finished successfully.

Although this program is simple, it introduces some basic parts of C++. Understanding these parts helps me prepare for more advanced programming concepts.

CHALLENGES AND LESSONS LEARNED

As a beginner, I sometimes struggle to understand programming concepts and find errors in my code. A small mistake, such as a missing semicolon, can prevent a program from working correctly.

These experiences teach me to read my code carefully, understand error messages, and test my programs. I am also learning that solving programming problems requires patience. Instead of giving up when something does not work, I need to identify the problem and try different solutions.

I believe that making mistakes is a normal part of learning. Each mistake gives me a chance to understand the topic better.

MY GOALS AS A COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENT

My goal is to improve my programming skills and learn more about software development, web development, and other areas of computer science. I also want to build projects that can solve real problems and help other people.

I plan to practice regularly, explore learning resources, and work with other students. By doing these things, I hope to become more confident in my abilities and prepare myself for future opportunities in the technology field.

CONCLUSION

My journey in Computer Science is just beginning. I know that there will be challenges, but I am willing to learn and improve through practice. Every program I create gives me a better understanding of how technology works.

For other beginners, my advice is to start with simple programs, keep practicing, and do not be afraid of making mistakes. Learning to code takes time, but consistent effort can help you make progress.

What was the first programming language you learned, and what advice would you give to a beginner? I would love to hear your thoughts.
