hmm, can you try with an ubuntu based distro? I only tested this approach with Ubuntu and Linux Mint. I also saw a couple of guys that reported success using Arch.

Also, do you see any errors at all when installing macbook12-spi-driver?
I installed kali linux on the latest iso available on the official website, the 2020 version.
