How do you guys test your ideas with your initial user base to determine if they like your idea? Do you go through the customer discovery process by Steve Blank or do you try it out with friends first.

Friends are good for collecting some first insights but they're biased in your favor in most cases. Try to get feedback from persons who should be your future customers.
I agree. Especially for usability. My friends will show me where they get stuck and what's confusing.
